The Florida Department of Health Celebrates National Public Health Week April 3-7! School Health Nursing goes far beyond those busy little walls of our School Health Clinics. The School Health Team of the Gilchrist County Health Department, is on campus to ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of our Students, Faculty and Staff, but of our Community of Families as well. Each visit, to the School Health Clinic is an opportunity for not only taking care of the “needs at hand”, but a time to educate our students and their families. A discussion with Parents in the prevention, control and spread of communicable diseases is commonplace. A “chat’” about healthier lifestyles and healthier eating habits is part of our conversations more often than not. The School Health Team also serves as a referral source for many areas in Public Health in our community. This may include Medical, Behavior/Developmental and Dental referrals. Our School Health Staff serve on Community Health Committees. Having a “voice” in the planning of Community events and Educational Programs provides yet another opportunity to promote Public Health awareness in our community. We are a small community, Gilchrist County, Florida,. The services that are provided by the Gilchrist CHD School Health Staff go far beyond those “school bells”. It does take a village to raise our children. But then again, it takes a caring, diligent School Health Staff, to raise a village.
