The Florida Department of Health in Gilchrist County (DOH-Gilchrist) is responsible for conducting investigations of all reported communicable diseases that occur in Gilchrist County. Certain communicable diseases such as influenza require DOH-Gilchrist and other designated county providers to monitor the presence of influenza by testing symptomatic individuals. The results are reported to the Florida Department of Health's Epidemiology Program at the State Health Office in Tallahassee, Florida so that the incidence of influenza can be monitored statewide.
Our first response to a report of a communicable disease is to confirm the presence of the disease either by phone or face to face interviews. DOH-Gilchrist has a responsibility to ensure that all infected individuals are identified, evaluated, and treated, if indicated, as quickly as possible in order to contain the disease and prevent further spread. Our Epidemiology staff provides education for the general public, physicians, hospitals, day care centers, nursing homes, schools, veterinarians, animal services, and other agencies in the county.
Some of the infectious diseases we investigate include:
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STD's)
- Shigella/Salmonella
- Tuberculosis (TB)
- Hepatitis
- Rabies
- Influenza
- Brucellosis
